The Live Earth Awards!!

This is a guest post from Nick Juravich about the Live Earth Concert in NYC on 7-7-07.
Section 320, Row 29, Seat 25 in Giants Stadium would be a fabulous seat for a Quidditch Match. Tucked up under the Jumbotron (which casts a welcome shade in a New York summer), one row from the top, and directly behind the goalposts (if there were any up), it has a fabulous view of the hills rolling away to North Jersey and the Catskills above the stadium. A perfect place to watch bespectacled kids zooming around on broomsticks. For the Live Earth concert, it was slightly less fabulous, given that we were so high up the six-story light decks blocked our sight-lines to the stage and the artists were miniscule, but that's where I was sitting, so that's where these impressions are coming from.
For the record, the sound was excellent.

Rather than just give a rundown, I'm taking the fact that the concert, a bunch of short sets interspersed with speeches, reminded me of an awards show and running with it. Without further ado, here are the Live Earth Awards!

Best Early Act: This is a TERRIBLE spot on the bill—the stadium is half-full, people are barely in their seats or paying attention, and the ones that have dared to sit down have had all the energy baked out of them by the sun and heat. High-energy rock feels like noise, hip-hop gets ignored . . . it's just a crappy slot. But kudos to K.T. Tunstall and her band, who delivered a perfect combination of vocals and acoustic guitars to wake us up a little bit, and also to make the whole 'sitting in a giant cement bowl of still hot air' thing feel a little more chilled out, like being a concrete beach. I know they had a genre advantage (I’m not sure Taking Back Sunday could’ve done anything about sounding like noise) but still, they nailed their songs and turned heads.

Best 'Know Your Audience' Genre Adjustment: Keith Urban, who would doubtless sound plenty like he hailed from Alabama if he was playing in Montgomery (though he's actually an Aussie, as my boy Alex Dewar informed me), turned up the crunch, turned down the twang, and delivered an excellent set of rocking numbers that were supremely enjoyable even for the devout haters of country who populate the Northeast.

The 'Tipper Gore' Award: Perhaps in deference to Al's wife, once the leader of the 'Parental Advisory' charge, all three rappers on the bill edited profanity and the newly dead-and-buried n-word out of their rhymes. Akon cheated a bit, getting the whole crowd to holler the edited line, but all in all, it worked, and seemed to be a nice gesture if it was that. If they were ordered to keep it clean, well, that would seriously annoy me.

Best Celebrity Speech: RFK Jr., easily. No silly jokes, no little kids (cute though they are), no platitudes, nothing confusing, just a blast of old-school populist rhetoric delivered with venom in a voice that sounds like it’s been aged in bourbon and slow-roasted over unfiltered Lucky Strikes. I felt like I was watching the original ‘All the King’s Men’ only with a hero instead of an anti-hero. RKF Jr. for President.
Sex Symbol Award: Akon. This guy is at the height of his powers, he can rap, he can croon, he’s built like a more jacked version of Usher, and his songs are all about love and sex and seduction and dirty dancing. Not only was his sound fabulous, and perfect for the late afternoon, but he’s one of those artists, like Prince in his prime, who knows how to build up the tension and then release it and make the crowd go nuts with the flick of an eyelid or a jump off the stage. He took his shirt off and strolled around the crowd at the end of his set with people grabbing at him like he could heal the sick. If Akon ever makes eyes at your girlfriend, God help you.

The Emil Zatopek Human Locomotive Award: Kanye West. My least favorite part about this concert was the set lengths, which ranged between 30-40 minutes for each act, resulting in some seriously frustrating set lists (only four songs apiece from the Smashing Pumpkins and the Police) and in general, some ‘but we were only just getting started’ vibes from the crowd when artists walked off.
Not for Kanye, who put himself in the James Brown/Bruce Springsteen Pantheon of performers who kill themselves for their audience with his set. He sprinted onto the stage and blasted through a well-rehearsed medley of all his major hits while ranging all over the stage, stopping only to breathe and even making that theatrical, deep breaths before the plunge. Towards the end of his precious minutes, he clambered past a camera boom to the very edge of the stage, and then sprinted across the whole damn stage (a good 50 yards) as fast as he could while rapping. It would have looked bizarre in another context, but the crowd LOVED it. It was basically Kanye saying ‘I am now going to do the hardest thing I can think of so you all know I am working as hard as I can out here.’ Just awesome. By the time he sauntered off he looked like he’d just gone
15 rounds with Apollo Creed. If every artist or band had put that kind of planning and energy into their set, this would have been the best concert in history, hands down.

Best Collaboration: As much as I loved the incongruity of Kanye West rapping over ‘Message in a Bottle’ while John Mayer just sort of played guitar in the background (and can someone please tell me why they couldn’t think up a better finale than this . . . Kanye did his best to save it, and it was pretty cool, but where was Bon Jovi? Where was Billy Corgan? People, step it up!), this one clearly goes to Keith Urban and Alicia Keys, whose cover of Gimme Shelter would have made Keith Richards--a devotee of soul who loved Otis Redding’s cover of ‘Satisfaction’-- weep tears of joy (well, actually, he probably weeps grain alcohol, but whatever). That was the concert’s first big ‘wow’ moment, and the instrumentation was perfect, it really had some ‘oomph’ to it. Also, they didn’t just come out together—Keith Urban did the first verse himself, and then shouted ‘ladies and gentlemen, Ms. Alicia Keys!’ which is the only way to bring on a guest star.

Best Credited Cover of an Old-School Funk/Soul Tune: Alica Keys, ‘Living for the City’ by Stevie Wonder. She only played a couple of verses, but whatever, she nailed it, piano and voice, and even got the little inflections that Stevie uses. You know she’s a student of soul, and there’s something cool about an artist just perfectly covering a song by one of their heroes. By the way, I’m awarding a ‘Least Valuable Friends’ Award to every guy I knew who didn’t tell me that Alicia Keys was smokin’ hot. I didn’t think it was possible to be thunderstruck by a woman who was 100 yards and 10 stories away, but holy hell, when she came out in that dress, it damn near knocked me into the Hudson. I already knew she was an incredible singer, but now I know that heaven is a cozy bar with Old Style on tap and Alicia Keys behind the piano in that dress doing a 50-50 mix of her songs and soul numbers.

Best Uncredited Rip-Off of an Old-School Funk/Soul Tune: John Mayer, whose reinvention of himself as a bluesman would be absolutely insufferable if he wasn’t so damn good at guitar (but he is—the guy can wail, he had SRV moments out there). Still, I can’t bring myself to like the guy who singlehandedly destroyed male vocals by convincing a whole generation of singer-songwriters that you can whisper your way through songs and women will love you (even if you’re a horrific misogynist, like Mayer). He confirmed his obnoxiousness by shamelessly ripping off ‘People Get Ready’ by the Impressions in one of his new songs (I’d tell you what it was called, but I didn’t hear it because I tune him out when he talks). It was a killer cover, horns and all, but it was a complete and total heist. Well done, big guy—I could re-write ‘Midnight Train to Georgia’ and it’d sound pretty good, too. Jackass. In honor of the original, I sang it as loud as I could over his version, which drew death stares from the middle-aged ladies with their 800 dollar coach purses in front of us.

Best Inflatable Animal: Roger Waters’ giant pig, which was led floating at upper-deck level around the stadium by guys dressed as butchers during ‘Another Brick in the Wall.’ Good to know you can make a career out of being a complete weirdo as long as your songs rock. Also, I salute Roger Waters’ response to David Gilmour’s pulling an Axl Rose (though I guess he did it first) and claiming all the rights to Pink Floyd and then quitting. Rather than mope around, he just got a band together and started touring doing sweet covers of their songs. Though I suppose G&R’s guys couldn’t have done that . . . Slash’s guitar would have been a good start, but can anyone sing like Axl? I guess not.
Still, ten points to Roger Waters for being undeterred by his crazy bandmate.

Worst Equipment Failure: The microphone that managed to cut out TWICE during Fall Out Boy’s big hit, both times during the quiet, vocals-first part that everyone would have sung along with if they’d know what was happening (“Am I more, than you bargained for, yeah . . . ”). It was right at the beginning of their set, too, and it kind of killed it. What a drag for them.

Best Generation-Defining Moment: When the crowd, composed heavily of 20- somethings, went absolutely ballistic for the Smashing Pumpkins. These guys haven’t had a new album in seven years, their last few were kind of awful anyway, and they played two new songs that we couldn’t really jam to because we’d never heard them, but we didn’t care: this was the band that brought you Today, Tonight, Tonight, and the rest of the songs you listened to in your ‘Zero’ T-shirt while lying on your floor on a summer afternoon wondering why the world was so cold and dark. If hearing Billy Corgan scream ‘CAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGE’ in Bullet with Butterfly Wings doesn’t light a fire somewhere deep in your soul, you’re not part of my generation.

The “You’re from Jersey? You Don’t Say” Award: Bon Jovi, who got the loudest cheer by far in the Meadowlands, claimed the stadium as ‘home,’ and then introduced “Dead or Alive” with the line ‘and now, please rise for the national anthem.’ They owned the crowd—the big guy next to me and the aforementioned middle-aged ladies sang every word to every song (including their new Bon- Country album), and Jon Bon Jovi didn’t even have to sing the chorus to ‘Livin’
on a Prayer’ because the stadium was absolutely drowning him out. While we’re on the subject of Bon Jovi . . .

The Sci-Fi Award for Non-Linear Aging: Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora. Jon Bon Jovi looks 25, Richie Sambora looks like Keith Richards’ shady uncle. How are they even remotely the same age? What the hell happened to Richie, or what are they feeding Jon? I know Richie had drug problems, but what was he taking, thyroid juice? He’s aged faster than Robin Williams in ‘Jack.’ If those two were to walk into a bar, Bon Jovi would get carded, Richie would get the senior discount, and the lady in the corner would say ‘how nice of that boy to take his grandfather for a drink.’ Unless of course that bar was in Jersey, in which case they’d both be mobbed by screaming fans.

Best Recycling: The Police, who busted out their song from Live Aid 20 years ago to open their Live Earth set. On a separate note, though, the Police were sort of disorienting to listen to: Sting can hit most of the notes, but not all of them, the drummer, Stuart Copeland, plays these awesome fills but all the songs seem to kind of speed up, and Sting kept slightly changing the lyrics to songs (“Message in My Bottle?”). I kind of wondered why they were the headliner— it sort of seemed like Bon Jovi would have been a better choice, especially after watching the way the Jersey crowd reacted. They didn’t do a bad job, they just don’t quite make me think ‘HEADLINER’ the way Bon Jovi does.

And finally, a little report card for the organizers:
Well done on the universally cool and simple sets (maps of the word, made out of something like looked like flashing old tires), the spinning stage, the highlights from other shows playing during the breaks between acts, and the sound, which was fabulous.
Not so well done on the very short sets, the ordering of the bands (it just felt uneven, and Roger Waters right after Bon Jovi but before The Police was a major letdown in energy), and the choice of venue--all apologies to Giants Stadium, which was perfectly adequate, but can’t we have a concert for the green earth in a park? Damn you, DC and NY, for being such misers about your grass. Chicago would have let you host it, but we already have Lollapalooza.
That’s reason #650,235 why Chicago is the greatest American city. Kanye West is reason #8.

All in all, a good show with some great performances, efficient and effective.
As for the climate-change message, it came through, though not too terribly strongly (we were consuming like crazy, after all). Still, if the various human causes warrant concerts, and they do, then certainly the earth, home to all of us, does. It’s not going to change anything the way legislation or personal responsibility will, but it raised awareness and put climate change and those who care about it on the front pages yet again. That’s a good thing.

A Dramatic Recitation of Celebrity Poetry

Standing here in Rhodes House, we often find ourselves in Oxford-style debate, pondering who the greatest voices of our generation are. Yet, we continually reach the same conclusion- it is celebrities who provide these great voices.

Celebrities define who we are today. They are passionate, ambitious and take great pictures. They work long hours in difficult conditions filming epic sequences for the films that shape our lives. They make a living by attending parties. They are tireless servants for the good of humanity. They are second only to our parents in nurturing and caring for the world’s children- and sometimes not even second. They show us how to live full and healthy lives and they show us how to take care of our bodies. They are the guardians of the intellectual fortress. They inspire us to be our best. They care about others sometimes in addition to caring about themselves.

Celebrities make a difference. They make the difference.

Let us consider some questions:

Who are the greatest social activists and humanitarians of our time?
Angelina Jolie, Jay-Z, Madonna.

Who are the greatest public intellectuals and public servants of our time?
Ronald Reagan, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Rosie O’Donnell.

What are some of the greatest romances of all time?
Basinger and Baldwin, J.Lo and Diddy, Hilton and Carter…

What do all of these people have in common? They are celebrities.

What would we be missing without celebrities?
Movies. Music, Television. Food. Water. Shelter. Fire. Wind. Earth. Heart. Freedom.

We believe that celebrities in our society today are underappreciated and we would like to do our part to help the world appreciate their presence and rejoice in their splendour. With this in mind, we would like to share with you some of their most intimate thoughts and words.

We miss those days (last week) when celebworld was more interesting than our lives. And this week, it wasn't. In an unprecedented act of celebrity knowledge/worship, Toxic Chatter (read: Noorain, the real brains behind this operation -Adam) has constructed a chain of 35 celebrities...where the links of the chain are romances, dates, affairs, rumored hook-ups, marriages/divorces, etc.

If any of these links surprise you, pay attention to the show as we tell you all about them, even if they're just rumors, and if you're still not convinced, well...blame Wikipedia.

We enjoyed having local British celebrity expert Isabella Steger on the show so much, we had to have her back. Let's face it, we had a lot to learn about this place and its celebs.

In this mini-podcast, we take on Hugh Grant and Liz Hurley, Colin Firth vs. Colin Farrell, and the faux Britishness of Gwenyth Paltrow and Madonna. We digress, as we tend to do, to the Mile-High Club, footballers' girlfriends, Girls Aloud as the new Spice Girls...and of course, the ROYALS. Even her Majesty the Queen gets a shout out this week!

Say, What Ever Happened To...

Do you ever take a walk down memory lane, look over at the TV, and wonder to yourself..."Whatever happened to that dude?"

In our time off, Toxic Chatter wants to bring you the answers to these questions, and we start with our first slate of forget-me-nows:

TOM GREEN

Of course you remember this Canadian comic from his Jackass-inspiring antics on MTV's The Tom Green Show. After all, who could forget that testicular cancer "special"?

Well, he put a few movies in the can, for better or worse: Freddy Got Fingered, Stealing Harvard, ... ring any bells?

In more recent years, Tom has had segments on Jay Leno's show and has starred in a TV movie for kids, Bob the Butler. He published an autobiography, released two solo albums as his rapping alter ego MC Face, and he's got a new movie in post-production called Prankstar. Somewhere in there, he also married and divorced Drew Barrymore.

As if that weren't enough, Tom started an Internet broadcast call-in show for ManiaTV.com in June 2006 called Tom Green Live. His fans are also rallying behind a bid for him to take Conan O'Brien's place as host of Late Night when Jay Leno retires in 2009.

That's a lot of action for someone overcoming cancer and a legacy of poop jokes!

MARILYN MANSON (a.k.a., Brian Hugh Warner)

Oh Marilyn, what are you up to these days??

Well, on the romance front, the divorce from Dita von Teese, the burlesque model, came through in January 2007. The split is rumored the be the result of Marilyn's affections wandering to actress Evan Rachel Wood. But not to be too much of a downer, Jenna Jameson had some very nice things to say about Mr. Manson in her book How to Make Love Like a Pornstar.

In July 2005, Marilyn said that he is shifting his professional focus from music to filmmaking ("the world is not worth putting music into right now," Marilyn told PEOPLE), and he's currently working on his directorial debut, Phantasmagoria: The Visions of Lewis Carroll.

He's also a watercolor painter and has sold his works for over $5,000 to the likes of Jack Osbourne, Lisa Marie Presley, Andy Dick, Dave Navarro, and Nicholas Cage. On Halloween 2006, he opened his own gallery in L.A. called the Celebritarian Corp. Gallery of Fine Art, named after his art movement, the Celebritarian Corporation. We couldn't explain it if we tried.

Way to go, Marilyn!!

JANEANE GAROFALO

You might know Janeane from a lot of different places: The Larry Sanders Show, six unpleasant months on SNL, or The Truth About Cats and Dogs.

What you might not know is that she was the first choice for the role of Monica on Friends, but turned it down. Her Larry Sanders character was the inspiration for Maya on Just Shoot Me. And she was passed over at the last minute for the lead role in Jerry Maguire. Tough break.

Well, she shopped a pilot for a TV series in 2003 and another in 2005, but neither was picked up. She became a co-host of The Majority Report on Air America in March 2004, but she announced she was leaving in June 2006...reportedly because of tensions with her co-host Sam Seder. That's just not how we do things on Toxic Chatter, y'all.

She's scheduled to do stand-up comedy dates in April 2007 along with Marc Maron and Henry Rollins.

-- Viacom ruining our lives and taking all the good TV off YouTube

-- Tyra, inexplicably, being nominated for an Emmy for Best Daytime Host. Blech.

-- U + Me = Us, but DJ AM + Mandy Moore = DUNZO

-- Britney's out of rehab and on the loose. Lock your liquor cabinets.

-- Naomi Campbell does 5 days of community service as only she can. Full glamour, head held high, ... and her Rolls Royce driver handing her purse off to the attending sherrif. Just keep your phone to yourself, please. Kthanks. (She scares us.)
-- Sanjaya and we'll leave it at that.
-- LLo and Jude Law spending some time together--do I smell a Bahamavention coming on or what??

--We'd love to post clips for you of Paula Abdul being ridiculous on QVC ("Feathers are about...flying.") and Rosie being Rosie on The View. But Viacom is being a Web 2.0 bully.

-- And now it's back to waiting yet another week for a new episode of The Office....

So it's Spring Break time here at school, and luckily in the UK, that means six weeks instead of one. BOO YA!

We won't be able to do live shows from the studio as usual, but FEAR NOT. We've pre-recorded some timeless material in mini-podcasts that we'll be podcasting each week, every Sunday as usual.

During the next few weeks, we'll give you a crash course in British pop culture, we'll reminisce about your childhood TV shows, and we'll dissect some of your favorite daytime TV personalities.

So you can't call in, you can't listen live...but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy your weekly CHATTER. We'll still be checking our email, and we'd love your comments here on the blawg.
